and why you should too
It is no secret that our friends from the USA have discovered just how good Portugal is. From the low cost of living, excellent health care and array of affordable property options to the stunning scenery, bustling social life and safety, those from across the pond are leaving their jobs and homes to change their lives on our Atlantic shores.
Recently, Forbes magazine chose Portugal as one of the 10 "cheapest" places to live for US citizens and interestingly, not just for those looking to retire – the demographic of buyers looking at Portugal is now changing, but that’s another article for another day! Based on data from International Living’s Annual Global Retirement Index, designed to help point people to specific places that would be best for them using their budget and priorities as guidelines, Portugal was named the top country to live in.
One of the main reasons that Portugal, right now, is such a favourable destination for Americans is the strength of the US dollar (if you would like information or help with transferring your American dollars, British pounds or any other currency into Euros then get in touch with our trusted currency exchange partner Lumon.) As well as the preferential exchange, the visa options that Portugal offers (the Golden Visa, D7, NHR or D6 to name just a few) make staying here long-term relatively easy.
Portugal is also a safe country and one that has a professional, almost free, health care system. Choosing to use the public healthcare system will not cost the earth and even if new arrivals want the security of health insurance to be able to use private health care the cost of this is far cheaper than the equivalent back in the states.
The day-to-day cost of living can also be compared in a positive light. Usually, Americans or those moving from big cities in the UK or the rest of Europe will find food prices, rent, entertainment and the odd glass of wine cheaper than they did back home. And, because we have over 300 days of sunshine here every year, if you are finding the purse strings a little tight one month, popping down to the beach, taking a walk along the coast or enjoying your favourite book in the sun can all be done free of charge.
If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the capital Lisbon or second city Porto then we would suggest looking to live in the Algarve – and that isn’t just because that is where we work, although it is a bonus! There are numerous Algarve villages, towns and cities that offer the cosmopolitan feel of a city but with a fraction of the outlay. From Lagos in the west to Tavira in the East there is definitely something for everyone. Construction of the properties is also good – although be prepared for some quirky or unique features to be around, Portugal still has a good deal of traditional architecture which adds to the overall charm of the country.
Portugal is a fantastic country for anyone looking to make a change to their daily lifestyle, it’s a great country for those looking for a more affordable life and it’s the perfect tonic for those who just want somewhere to escape the daily grind, the rat race or the frenetic pace of life.
